October First Friday

Posted by YLakeland on October 6th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I have just experienced my first “First Friday” event.  I never knew about all the different and numerous attractions that are downtown during a “First Friday” night.  I attended with a few friends of mine
who also were unaware of the events.  We enjoyed ourselves tremendously. We had the chance to see a car show, hear music, and admire different types of art.  I hope to see you at November’s “First Friday” which will be on November 7th.  Have a great weekend Lakeland!

Fashion for Compassion Tonight in Tampa!

Posted by YLakeland on September 27th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

We have been given the opportunity to support the “Bloomingdale Library Attack Victim” tonight at the Tampa Convention Center. Many of you might be familiar with this story from local news stations.  This story touches my heart dearly. A senior in high school, who had a full ride to University of Florida, was attacked outside of the Bloomingdale Public Library on April 24th, 2008.  She is currently in a rehab center in Sarasota learning how to function on her own again. She will continue to need rehab for numerous years.  The family is struggling tremendously with her medical bills. A group of local students is putting on a fashion show tonight on her behalf.  All proceeds raised will go towards the victims medical bills. Tickets are $20 if purchased online and $25 if purchased at the door. Please check out the website for more information.

Changes at Y Lakeland

Posted by YLakeland on September 19th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

It was announced a few weeks ago that I, Cat, would be writing for Lakeland Local. Lakeland Local is a hyperlocal blog that discusses news prevelant to Lakeland. It’s not a paying gig, but the real reward come from having the opportunity to write about what interests the author and see how others in the community respond.

In part the change is due to my resigning at the LEDC. Over the last month I have been transitioning out of the LEDC which means also transitioning out of Y Lakeland. Have no fear…Y Lakeland will continue on and continue on strong. There is a great team at the LEDC to take over.

For me…I am officially signing off! Heiwa.

Fire on Main Street

Posted by YLakeland on September 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

It looks like there is a fire on Main Street near the Civic Center.  We are located in the SunTrust Building on S. Florida and can see heavy black smoke.  I will update when I know more.  (The picture below was taken from our office…the smoke seems less then at first.)
